How do we go from our first job to 20 years later? Luckily, I have video evidence. My priorities have changed, but who I am at my heart has not.
After I graduated from college in 2003, I began my first job journey. Right away, there were a few jobs that didn't work for me. At one point, I was a door-to-door salesperson who tried to sell mobile phone plans to businesses. I wore a gray business suit and walked around the streets of Minneapolis, but I only sold one phone to my mother in the end.
I made a video resume after I quit that job because I wanted to use my creativity more and not worry so much about sales quotas. It was something I called a "Reality Resume." I remember showing it to a potential employer during an interview, and they weren't impressed.
“My priorities have changed, but who I am at my heart has not.”
In any case, the video makes me think of a time when I didn't have LinkedIn or my two-page resume of marketing experience. It is also a record of who I was before entering into a world of working with others, learning as technology advanced rapidly and landing on the other side of a global pandemic.
This time around on my job journey, I'll use video, blogging, social media, and other ways to express myself creatively. My updated Reality Resume will be ready soon. Take a look at my thoughts 20 years ago, and then join me on my unfiltered job search journey. My plan is that along the way, we all learn something new.
